How to Extract Text from a Screenshot on Mac—and What to Do Next

Capture words you cannot select, check the OCR result, and continue with translation or an AI task.

Text inside a screenshot, scanned page, or app window is part of the image, so you cannot always select and copy it like a paragraph in a document. On Mac, OCR can recognize those words and turn them into editable text. From there, you can translate a passage, summarize it, or ask an AI tool about it—while checking that recognition preserved the details you need.

Choose the right starting point

If the source app lets you select the text, copy it directly. That usually preserves punctuation and layout better than OCR. Use OCR when the words are only pixels: for example, a dialog, slide, chart label, or image someone sent you. Keep the screenshot as well when layout, colors, or the relationship between labels matter.

Capture and review text with Frset

For content visible on screen, use Frset's screenshot workflow:

  1. Start Screenshot from the menu bar or your configured shortcut and select the relevant area.
  2. Choose Extract Text from the screenshot toolbar.
  3. Compare the recognized text with the image. Check names, numbers, punctuation, links, and line order carefully.
  4. Correct mistakes before copying the text or sending it to another tool.

If the screenshot is already in Frset's clipboard history, open that image and choose Extract Text there instead of capturing it again. Frset requires macOS 13 or later and Screen Recording permission for screen capture. Its OCR uses Apple's local text recognition. OCR can still make mistakes, especially with small, low-contrast text or complex layouts.

Continue with translation or AI

For a passage in another language, send the corrected OCR text to a translation workflow and review the source and result together. For a summary, explanation, or rewrite, use an AI tool configured in Frset or paste the text into your preferred assistant. Include a short instruction about the intended output, such as “summarize the key steps” or “translate this interface message into Chinese.”

Keep context that OCR cannot express. For a chart or interface issue, include the screenshot or describe where the text appeared. For an error message, preserve exact codes and nearby lines. The related guide on choosing text or screenshots for AI debugging explains when each input is useful.

You can continue in the OCR panel with Apple system translation (macOS 15 or later), Google, Microsoft, or a configured AI provider. The available options and where text is processed depend on the provider.

Check privacy before sending

Local OCR does not determine where translation happens. Frset offers Apple system translation on macOS 15 or later, as well as remote services such as Google, Microsoft, and configured AI providers. Remote services process submitted text under their terms. Check the selected provider; a locally hosted model uses the endpoint you configured.
