Alternative
CleanShot X Alternatives for Mac
Screenshot capture, recording, sharing, and later reuse need different kinds of replacements.
Start by listing what you use in CleanShot X: capture, annotation, scrolling screenshots, OCR, screen recording, or shareable cloud links. Frset can cover a capture-to-clipboard routine, but this comparison does not establish it as a replacement for the recording and cloud-sharing parts.
If cost is the main concern, check the current CleanShot plans. Basic is a one-time purchase with a defined update period, while Pro adds subscription-based cloud and team capabilities. Leaving because of an assumed mandatory subscription may solve a problem you do not have.
Alternatives grouped by the capture task
Frset for capture, annotation, and clipboard reuse
Frset is relevant when a capture becomes material you will use again: an error message to copy, a reference to keep visible, or text to translate. It includes screenshot selection, annotation, long capture, floating references, and local OCR, connected with clipboard history and notes.
Its documented scope here does not include a CleanShot-equivalent recording editor or hosted sharing service. Keep those needs on a separate checklist.
Vorssaint for a modular utility app
Vorssaint's official site lists screenshot capture and annotation, screen-text extraction, and screen recording within a modular Mac toolbox. It is a relevant candidate for capture among other utilities. Verify required recording, editing, and sharing behavior rather than assuming every CleanShot feature has a matching module.
Raycast for finding screenshots already on disk
Raycast's Search Screenshots command provides OCR search over configured folders. It is useful when your real problem is finding and reusing an old capture. Treat that as a retrieval option; it does not by itself establish a replacement for a capture editor or recorder.
Paste for a clipboard image collection across devices
Paste documents text search inside saved images and pinboards across Apple devices. It is relevant after capture, when you want to retain and reuse copied images. It is not presented here as a screenshot-authoring app.
Which part can each choice replace?
| Required job | Candidate | Boundary to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Capture, mark up, extract text, and reuse locally | Frset | Long capture depends on the target; recording and hosted sharing are not established |
| Capture alongside system utilities | Vorssaint | Verify the exact module and permission requirements |
| Locate captures by recognized text | Raycast | Search and reuse rather than a full authoring workflow |
| Keep copied images in a synced collection | Paste | Clipboard organization rather than capture creation |
| Recording, polished capture output, and cloud links | Keep CleanShot X unless a tested replacement meets the list | Partial feature overlap is insufficient |
CleanShot's screenshot page and feature catalog cover a dedicated capture workflow, including annotation, scrolling capture, text recognition, recording, and sharing. Those are reasons to preserve it if they are central to your work.
Where Frset makes sense
For a bug report, capture a region, add an arrow or a text note, obscure sensitive details with mosaic annotation, and copy the result. For a technical reference, extract text or keep the capture floating while you work. Frset supports shapes, arrows, free drawing, text, and mosaic tools, plus saving and clipboard reuse.
Frset selection OCR uses Apple Vision locally. Screenshot search is a separate setting, off by default. It indexes eligible screenshots created by Frset and does not make every copied image searchable. Recognition varies with macOS and input content; long capture is not guaranteed for every app.
If the extracted text needs translation, Frset offers Apple, Google, Microsoft, and configured AI options. Apple system translation needs macOS 15 or later, supported languages, and language packs. Network providers receive submitted text or image content. A locally stored screenshot does not make all processing local.
Retention and sharing deserve separate checks
Frset Free gives access to the latest 24 hours of ordinary history and uses a separate seven-day cleanup rule. Pro retention follows settings and an optional capacity limit. Keep important original captures outside temporary history if you need a durable archive.
CleanShot cloud sharing is also a separate data path from local captures; its cloud privacy policy applies to that service. Do not compare privacy using only the location where the initial screenshot was created.
Try the capture you actually need
Keep existing originals and test a region capture, a scrolling page, a redaction, and a text extraction in your usual apps. If you need recordings or cloud feedback, leave those workflows in place while evaluating. No automatic transfer of CleanShot history into Frset is assumed.
