Frset vs CleanShot X

A screenshot and content workflow, or a dedicated capture, recording, and sharing toolkit? Choose by what you need after the screenshot.

CleanShot X is built around capturing, editing, recording, and sharing screen content. Frset connects screenshots to clipboard history and text work. Both can capture scrolling content, annotate images, keep a screenshot floating above other windows, and recognize text locally. The main difference is the workflow each app covers beyond capture.

This comparison is published by the Frset team. It describes documented capabilities and plan structure; it does not claim a side-by-side test of speed, capture compatibility, or OCR accuracy.

CleanShot's feature catalog documents capture, annotation, on-device OCR, recording, video editing, Cloud, and capture history. Its pricing page currently lists macOS 13 or newer, a Basic one-time purchase with one year of updates, and a Pro subscription. Cloud is optional for using the app, and plan details can change.

Choose CleanShot X for capture production and sharing

CleanShot X is the more direct fit when the screenshot or recording is the deliverable. Its capture tools include area, window, full-screen, and scrolling capture. The editor adds annotation, backgrounds, and other image finishing tools, and its video editor can polish recordings. CleanShot Cloud can host uploads and provide share links, with plan-dependent storage and collaboration features.

CleanShot says text recognition runs on-device. Cloud upload is a separate, optional step: captures sent to CleanShot Cloud leave the Mac and are handled under its Cloud privacy policy. If local capture and optional hosted sharing are both useful, that separation matters more than a blanket label such as “local” or “cloud.”

Choose Frset when captures lead into clipboard and text work

Frset is a better fit when you want to extract text, translate it, keep useful screenshots with copied material, or reuse them beside another app. OCR and QR recognition use Apple's on-device recognition. With clipboard recording enabled, eligible Frset screenshots can appear in clipboard history; Screenshot search is a separate setting, off by default, and covers eligible screenshots Frset creates rather than every image copied from elsewhere.

Frset also offers region and window capture, long screenshots, annotations, mosaic tools, and floating references. Long capture depends on the target app and its scrolling behavior. Frset's documented screenshot workflow does not include screen recording, a video editor, or a hosted screenshot-sharing service. You can save or copy a capture and share it through another app, but that is different from built-in Cloud hosting.

OCR itself is local. If you continue into a network translation or remote AI provider, the submitted content goes to that provider; see the translation guide and privacy policy. Keeping a screenshot locally does not make every later operation local.

How to choose

  • Choose CleanShot X if you need polished screenshot output, recording and video editing, capture history for both screenshots and recordings, or direct hosted sharing and collaboration.
  • Choose Frset if screenshots are one part of a broader routine for clipboard organization, OCR, translation, and text utilities.
  • Use both or keep another tool if you need CleanShot's recording or Cloud workflow alongside Frset's clipboard and text workflow.

Before switching, test a representative scrolling page, annotation, OCR task, and the way you share results. Keep original captures during the trial. Neither app is assumed to import the other's history, settings, or Cloud files.
