Is Mac's Built-In Translation Enough? See Which Steps It Covers
macOS can translate selected text, replace it while writing, and translate recognized text in Preview. Compare those steps with third-party workflows.
You may not need a separate translation app on your Mac. macOS can translate selected text in supported apps, copy the translation, or replace selected text while you are writing. Live Text can recognize text in supported images; for a screenshot, you can save it as an image, open it in Preview, select the recognized text, and translate it. Apple also offers downloadable languages for offline use. Availability depends on your system, language, region, and content. See Apple's Mac translation guide and Preview Live Text guide.
If you only need to understand a selected passage occasionally, the built-in tools may be enough. Consider a third-party app if you need more ways to start a translation, dictionaries, a choice of services, or OCR for text on screen.
When is Apple Translate a good fit?
The built-in workflow covers several common steps: translate selected text, copy the translation, or replace the selected text in a supported writing app. For image text, Preview can translate text that Live Text recognizes. You do not need to choose another translation app first, but you may need to save a screenshot and open it in Preview. Check that your app, language pair, and macOS version support the action you need.
For offline translation, confirm in System Settings whether the languages you need can be downloaded and what offline use supports. Online services, offline language resources, and third-party apps work differently; “built into Mac” does not mean every translation can happen offline.
When should you consider an alternative?
You translate selections across several apps
If the system action is inconvenient in the apps you use, compare tools with shortcuts, selection translation, or a separate results window. Bob and Easydict offer several Mac translation workflows; check their current documentation for service, dictionary, and extension details: the Bob guide and Easydict project.
You want to use a particular translation service
Check whether your preferred service has a Mac app or web workflow that suits you, which languages it supports, and whether it requires an account. Features and terms vary. For important text, keep the source available and review names, numbers, negation, and conditions in the result.
You want to translate text on the current screen directly
For a screenshot or image, Apple's Preview workflow may be enough: save the image, open it in Preview, select recognized text, and translate. This is different from selecting an area of the current screen without first saving a file. Frset lets you capture a screen area directly, recognize text locally on the Mac, and translate it with a service you choose. In its separate panel, you can correct the recognized source, translate again, and copy the result.
You need to copy, save, or continue editing the result
Translation may be only the first step. Frset supports input, selection, and screen translation. Input translation stays in the search tool preview, and successful input translations are saved in history. Selection and screen translation use a separate panel where you can edit the source, translate again, and copy the result. Frset may fit a workflow that connects screenshots, clipboard text, and further editing. It is not a CAT tool for professional translators and does not provide a full bilingual web-reading experience.
Apple Translate and Frset use different workflows
| Need | macOS translation and Live Text | Frset |
|---|---|---|
| Translate selected text | Translate it; copy the translation or replace the selected text while writing in supported apps | Use a selection shortcut, subject to app support and permissions |
| Translate a saved screenshot or image | Open it in Preview, select recognized text, and choose Translate | Select a screen area directly, then review OCR text in the result panel |
| Correct recognized source text | Edit the image or selection in its source workflow, then translate again | Edit the source in the panel and request another translation |
| Choose a translation service | Use Apple's available system translation and languages | Choose Apple, Google, Microsoft, or a configured AI provider |
| Reuse the result | Copy or replace selected text; offline support depends on downloaded language resources | Copy the result; successful input translations are saved in history |
This compares entry points and workflow, not translation quality. Live Text in Preview is a viable Apple-native route for supported image text; Frset's distinction is direct capture of the current screen and source correction in one workflow. Language availability and results vary by language pair, content, and selected service.
Frset requires macOS 13 or later. Its Apple system translation option requires macOS 15 or later, supported languages, and the necessary language resources. Selection translation requires macOS Accessibility permission and readable, copyable text from the source app; screen translation requires Screen Recording permission. Screen OCR runs locally, but Google, Microsoft, and remote AI providers receive the text submitted for translation. Local recognition does not mean the entire translation process is offline.
How to decide whether to replace the built-in option
Try your usual work: a passage you can select, a screenshot you can open in Preview, and a translation you need to reuse in an email or document. If the built-in workflow covers those tasks, keep using it. Consider an alternative when you specifically need dictionary lookup, another translation service, direct capture of the current screen, or a different way to review and reuse results.
