Turn Repeated Prompts into Custom AI Tools on Mac
Save the instruction once, give it a keyword, and apply it to new text without rebuilding the same prompt each time.
If you repeatedly ask AI to shorten a message, summarize a passage or extract action points, save that instruction as a custom tool in Frset. Give it a name and keyword, bind an AI provider, then supply fresh text each time you run it. The useful starting point is one repeatable task with a result you can check.
Choose a task with a clear output
"Improve this" leaves too much open. A more useful instruction states what to preserve, what to change and what the result should look like. For a message rewrite, that might mean keeping names, dates and commitments while shortening the wording.
Start with one of these small tasks:
- Summarize a passage: Return a short account of the main point and important qualifications, without adding facts.
- Rewrite a message: Make it concise and polite while keeping the original meaning and level of certainty.
- Extract actions: Identify actions, owners and deadlines explicitly mentioned in the text; mark missing details as unspecified.
Custom tools process text and return text. Treat them as saved instructions for a model, rather than a way to execute scripts, generate images or automate an entire project.
Create the tool in Frset
First configure an enabled provider in AI Providers settings. The cloud and local model guide explains that choice and setup.
- Open Frset settings and go to the tools list.
- Choose Custom AI Tool to create a new entry.
- Enter a short name, such as "Brief summary," and a description of its purpose.
- Set a unique keyword, such as
brief, without the leading slash. - Select the provider you configured and enter your instruction in Prompt.
- Save the tool, open Frset search and select it using its name or
/briefkeyword. - Enter a short sample passage, run the tool and inspect the result.
The name must fit the form's limit. Keywords must not conflict with another tool; letters, numbers and underscores are supported. If Save is unavailable, check the required fields and provider selection.
Frset appends the input text after your saved prompt. You do not need to put an input placeholder in the instruction or paste the changing source text into the tool definition.
Write instructions you can evaluate
For a summary, try:
"Summarize the following passage in three short sentences. Preserve its main conclusion, important conditions and uncertainty. Do not add information that is absent from the source. Return only the summary as plain text."
For a rewrite, try:
"Rewrite the following message in concise, polite English. Preserve names, dates, amounts and commitments. Do not make the message more certain than the original. Return only the revised message as plain text."
For action extraction, try:
"Extract the actions explicitly described in the following text. For each action, state its owner and deadline if given; otherwise say unspecified. Do not invent missing details. Use short plain-text lines."
These are starting instructions, not guarantees. Test each with a passage whose meaning you know. Include one example with missing information so you can check whether the model fills in details it should leave open.
Bring the instruction to selected text
Once the tool works in search, you can assign it a shortcut in tools settings. With Run on Selected Text enabled and the relevant macOS Accessibility permission, a supported text tool can use a readable selection from another app.
If an app does not expose the selection reliably, copy the passage and supply it in Frset search. For words inside an image, extract the text first. A custom text tool does not automatically receive your whole screen, document or conversation.
Refine the prompt against real examples
Compare the output with the source before copying it into a message or document. If a summary drops an important condition, add that requirement to the prompt and test again. Change one instruction at a time so you can tell what helped.
Remote providers receive the prompt and submitted text. Provider credentials and usage charges are separate from Frset's own plan and tool limits. Use the provider guide to choose where processing happens, and keep reusable prompt instructions in a Frset note if you want a reference while editing them.
