Alternative

Shottr Alternatives for Mac: Compare Screenshot Tools | Frset

Choose a Shottr alternative by the screenshot task you need to add or replace.

Shottr already covers a lot of screenshot work: capture, annotation, scrolling capture, OCR, QR reading, pixel measurement, and color tools. Look for an alternative only when you can name the gap—recording, richer cloud collaboration, a more polished presentation, or carrying extracted text into a broader workflow. The closest replacement depends on which of those jobs matters to you.

Shottr alternatives at a glance

App Best fit Where it differs from Shottr
Frset Screenshot-to-text and clipboard workflows Connects capture with OCR, translation, clipboard history, and text tools; not a screen recorder or hosted sharing suite
CleanShot X Recording, polished capture, and cloud sharing Adds video/GIF recording, editing, and cloud links; check current plan and cloud terms
macOS Screenshot Basic captures, markup, and built-in screen recording Already included with macOS; check whether its capture controls cover needs such as scrolling capture, pinning, or pixel measurement
Xnapper Balanced, presentation-ready screenshots Offers automatic layout balance, backgrounds, OCR, and automatic redaction; verify pixel measurement or scrolling capture needs separately
Snagit Documentation and cross-platform capture workflows More oriented toward tutorials, documentation, and recording; check current platform and license details

Choose the kind of replacement you need

Frset: work with text after capture

Frset is relevant when screenshots turn into reusable content. Capture and annotate a selection, extract text locally, translate it, or keep the image with clipboard history. Pinning can keep a reference visible while you work in another app.

Frset does not cover every Shottr job. Its documented workflow here does not include screen recording or a hosted screenshot-link service. Long capture depends on the target app, and automatic screenshot search is an optional index for eligible screenshots created by Frset, not every image on the Mac.

CleanShot X: add recording and sharing

Consider CleanShot X if Shottr’s screenshot features are not enough because you also record the screen, make GIFs, or share captures through a cloud workflow. Compare its current plans, update terms, and cloud policy against the way you actually work. This is a broader product category, not a like-for-like lightweight replacement.

macOS Screenshot: keep occasional capture simple

For occasional screenshots, basic markup, and screen recording, try the built-in macOS Screenshot app before adding another utility. Apple documents its capture controls and editing from the floating thumbnail in the Mac screenshot guide, with recording options linked from that guide. It is a reasonable fit for straightforward captures; check separately if you depend on scrolling capture, keeping a reference pinned, or pixel measurement.

Xnapper: make screenshots presentation-ready

If the main gap is visual presentation—balanced spacing, backgrounds, or a polished image to share—look at Xnapper’s current feature and pricing pages. Its official site lists automatic layout balance, backgrounds, on-device OCR, and one-click redaction for sensitive information. Check separately if you rely on Shottr’s pixel measurement or scrolling capture.

Snagit: create documentation and tutorials

Snagit is worth evaluating when screenshots are part of documentation, tutorials, or a recording workflow that needs editing. Review TechSmith’s current Snagit product page and license information, especially platform support and recording needs. Avoid comparing an annual price with a one-time license without aligning the term and included updates.

Before switching from Shottr

Make a short list of Shottr features you use: scrolling capture, pixel measurement, OCR, pinned images, annotation, or upload. Keep Shottr and its saved files available while you try the alternatives with the same tasks. Test a regular selection, a long page, OCR in your everyday apps, and blur or pixelation on synthetic sample data. Inspect the exported result to make sure the covered content is no longer visible; do not upload real sensitive screenshots for testing. Do not assume history or settings transfer between tools.

For privacy, Shottr’s policy says screenshots and OCR are processed locally unless you use Upload, and describes Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions. Upload sends the image to Shottr Cloud or a configured S3 bucket. Shottr Cloud links are public to anyone who knows or guesses the URL, currently have no expiration policy, and are not secure image storage; never upload private or sensitive screenshots. A custom S3 destination has its own storage and access settings.

Shottr remains free to use, with upgrade reminders after 30 days; its purchase page says a license is required for commercial use. Upload uses a separate, free token. Licensed users can request it through a form, while other users can request it by email; purchasing a license does not itself enable uploads. Read each alternative’s policy for cloud sharing or translation separately; local capture alone does not describe every later data flow.

Frset screenshot capture requires macOS Screen Recording permission. Its OCR runs on-device, and Frset collects limited product analytics and diagnostic data that does not include content. Network translation services receive the content submitted to them. See the Frset privacy policy, screenshot guide, and translation guide; Accessibility permission may apply to selection translation, a separate workflow.
